Persistent fatigue deserves a thoughtful conversation. Prepare a clear history before discussing hormones, sleep, and other possible contributors.
Bring the pattern, not just the symptom
Write down when your energy changed, whether the problem is daily, and what it prevents you from doing. Include sleep hours, snoring, work shifts, exercise changes, recent illness, and new medications. Distinguish feeling sleepy from feeling weak or unmotivated; those descriptions help the clinician decide what to explore.
A brief record is enough. You do not need a perfect tracking app or a list of tests purchased online. Bring previous laboratory results with their dates and reference ranges if you have them.
Fatigue alone does not diagnose low testosterone
The Endocrine Society explains that hypogonadism requires compatible symptoms and low testosterone levels, with more than one measurement for accurate assessment. Illness, nutrition, some medicines, and other factors may affect results. A clinician interprets testing in context rather than treating a single number.
Tell your provider if fertility matters to you. Testosterone treatment can affect sperm production, so family-planning goals belong in the conversation before treatment decisions.
Ask what each test would change
Useful questions include: What are we evaluating? Why is this test appropriate? What happens if the result is normal? Will I need a repeat measurement? Ask who will explain the findings and how follow-up is scheduled. Testing should support a clinical question, not simply produce a longer report.
Make room for more than one explanation
Discuss how the evaluation fits with your existing primary care and any specialist care. Do not stop prescribed medicines or start hormones on your own. A men’s health visit may lead to additional evaluation, lifestyle recommendations, treatment, or referral depending on the findings. It should not begin with a promise that hormones will resolve fatigue.
